License and Certification Program for GI Bill

Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) reimburses the cost of certification and licensing tests which are approved specifically for GI Bill. Only the cost of the tests is reimbursed by VA and no other additional fees related to certification or license is considered. Here is the summary of this program:

Overview of the Program:

Having license or certification can open a lot of opportunities for someone in today’s business environment. Most of the professions and jobs which are related to government regulations require a license. Although it is optional to have certification but is very much desired. If you want to get a job and make sure you keep growing in that, a certification is certainly a must.

It is proven that certifications play a major role in variety of jobs whether its computer field, mechanics, medical and so on. The amount you can get reimbursed is subjected to a maximum value of $2000 or the actual cost of the test, whichever is lower. In case you fail the test, you can take a retest as well. There are no restrictions on the number of retakes you can take for a test; however, if you have already passed a test, you cannot retake that test.

Note: – Every time the benefits of certification and licensing are utilized, it is deducted from the total entitlement months you have under VA benefits.  The amount charged for entitlement for post 9/11 GI Bill is dependent on the maximum annual amount and this is rounded up. Let’s take an example: Let us say, the annual maximum amount for academic year 2015/2016 is $1759.08. So, if the tests you undertake costs $1759.08, 2 months of entitlement are charged to you. Cost of the test is divided by full-time training’s monthly benefit rate in case of every other GI Bill program. So, if the test you undertake costs $684 and you are entitled to $1368 as full-time payment rate, one and half month of entitlement is utilized.

There are various certification and licensing programs that you can take under GI Bill benefits. Some of them are:
